Visiting Quartzsite

This morning we had breakfast at the restaurant at the Flying J Truck Stop just on the other side of I-10. This was something on Paddy’s list of things to experience, as he has read about people who love to eat at the Flying J on his RV forums. It was okay – no better, no worse than many other cafés. We split a cheese and mushroom omelet and each had a side of grits. The omelet had cut up pieces of sliced cheese on it, and the grits were a little undercooked.

Then we drove to Quartzsite, about 20 miles away, to see some places where people camp in the desert – something else on Paddy’s list. He seems quite taken with the notion of camping anywhere you want for free, in a sort of free-for-all fashion, without any amenities. People use generators, solar panels, or windmills to get electricity in their rigs. They go into town to empty their waste water, fill up on clean water, and refill their propane bottles. Apparently at the height of the “season” trucks some around to these places and sell water and pump-out service, but it’s too early yet for that. Needless to say, this is not anywhere on my list of things to experience.

While we were in Quartzsite, we drove all around looking at RV parks and lots with RV sites. All of the places are very deserty, not a blade of grass anywhere, and you know how I like my grass. Our place at River Breeze has grass because it is on the Colorado River.

Also while we were in Quartzsite, we went through a new subdivision, The Arroyos, which has very small homes (most about the size of a “park model” if you know what those are) with RV garages attached. It was very nice but pretty expensive for a place to spend just a few months per year.
