If you’re not familiar with Slab City, it is a place in the desert just outside Niland, CA, where there was once a military facility. Now people (I think similar to what we used to call “hippies”) more-or-less permanently boondock there. They have built some colorful religious signs and symbols on the side of a hill. It’s quite a sight and quite a site.
After Slab City, we ended up having to go all the way to Indio to get on I-10 to get to Joshua Tree. The Street Atlas software found other ways to get there, but after it send us out on an awful dirt road we didn’t trust it anymore for awhile. Then when we gave it another chance, it sent us via a road that turned out to be closed from last week’s rain storms.

When we finally got to Joshua Tree, we found out that all of the actual Joshua trees are on the north side of the park, some 35 or so miles from where we entered on the south side. But the drive in search of a Joshua tree was very interesting – past rock hills and giant rocks and ocotillo cacti and cholla cacti. And then we finally got to see a few Joshua trees and take up-close pictures of one.

The day was wearing down and we had a long drive home (back through Indio), so we didn’t go far enough to see forests full of Joshua trees. We’ll save that for next year. The advantage of coming home late is that we gave ourselves permission to stop off for some take-out Mexican food. Mmmmm!
